Surprise! You don't always have to lose weight.

The beautiful Mary in a PT with her coach, Monique.

What's going on, internet?

I want to tell you about my client, Mary.

I posted about her yesterday on Instagram. She's the one that has had an astronomical return on her investment over the last two weeks of putting in the hard work and seeing crazy success on the scales.

Her goal was to lose weight, and with a petite frame and clocking in under five and a half foot, she’s crushed it so far and is down 2.1kg.

She came in for her Week Three check in yesterday, and, if you’ll give me a drum roll, please…

She did not lose weight.

(In fact, she gained a little bit.)

These things happen - par for the course.

We've spoken about this things, but a reminder: sometimes things don't go in a straight line. That’s A-okay.

We had a little trouble shoot, and there were a few obvious reason that she didn't lose weight:

  • She’s recovering from COVID, and her appetite returned with a vengeance, so a bit of extra eating happened

  • I gave her an instruction to eat way more protein because she was a little bit under her target. I did not, however, give her clear enough instruction on how much to jump by (ert, my fault!) and she went bananas on the protein this week. Kind of cool, if you ask me. She’s listening!

  • There was a wee snack session, as real life will sometimes bring about

Nonetheless, were stoked with how she performed this week!

Now, if someone's coming in to lose weight and it's not happening, it’s obviously cause for concern.

The reason that we were so happy was because despite the scales not showing us what we were hoping to see this week, Mary has come in with this new sense of confidence about other changes that took place this week, and they made me so happy to see:

First, she's got a clearer picture of what meals are supposed to look like when she's put together a good plate of food for herself.

Second, she feels she's got a better handle on how she's meant to tackle it when there's a social situation and someone's putting food in front of her that might be really yum and totally good for the soul and totally good for her to eat at another point, but not right now while she's trying to get leaner.

It's the development of this skillset that I think has such a big impact into how things are gonna go for her.

So, we're okay with not moving the needle forwards this week, but we know with these new skills she's developing, we are on our way.

Remember:

If your goal is getting leaner, losing weight is sick.

But, it isn’t all that counts.

Learning how to eat for your body counts.

Making a mistake that you can learn from counts.

Building a new skill that you can use for any goal counts.

Play the longer game.

You don’t always have to lose weight.

Benjamin.
